The Romsdal Alps

The Romsdal Alps entail some of the most monumental, beautiful and dramatic landscape in Norway. The highest peak, the Store Venjetind, is 1.852 m above sea level. The Alps are very popular with trekkers, both locals and visitors.

The Trolltindane is a range of large characteristic peaks, and legend has it that they are a bridal procession of trolls turned to stone when caught by daylight. It is possible to pass and scale all of the peaks in the range, and depending on your stamina and speed you should set aside one to three days. Most visitors are taken away by the breathtaking beauty of the area.

The Troll's Wall

Even more dramatic is the Trollveggen (the Troll Wall), the north face of the 1740 m tall Troll Peak. With its 1100 meters of free fall it is the tallest vertical cliff in Europe. The Trollveggen has thus been a magnet for rock climbers and BASE jumpers from all over the world. At present there are 19 climbing routes on the wall, all in frequent use. BASE jumping off the cliff has been illegal since 1986 due to a long range of accidents. Coming from the north be sure to traverse the Trollstigen (the Troll’s Trail), Norway’s most famous hair pin road, on your way south through Åndalsnes to the Geiranger Fjord. Along with dramatic scenery and stunning views, the road also offers a glimpse into a unique chapter of Norwegian engineering history.
