After more than 20 years in the planning, the Norwegian Petroleum Museum was finally opened in Stavanger in 1999. With its distinct architecture and elaborate exhibitions it has since become an institution in the region welcoming more than 80.000 visitors a year.
Oil history
Take a walk through the sequential exhibitions and find answers to questions such as: - Why is there oil in Norway? - How is it drilled and refined, and to what uses can it be put? The museum gives extensive coverage of the history of oil drilling in Norway, from the rather crude solutions in the 1960's up to modern day technological innovations. In addition to the traditional text and footage displays you can learn hands on through various model installations placed throughout the exhibition. If you are interested in further study you can visit the Petroscope, a designated study area with an extensive library and several audiovisual and computer based applications. The Petroscope is popular with both adults and younger visitors.
For children
The museum also provides a special program for children with a designated guide. The tour takes you through several activities, the highlight for many being the drop in the escape chute. Are you up for the challenge?
Dining
After a long and absorbing walk through the building, visit the museum cafe, which doubles as a gourmet restaurant. Owned by one of Norway's most acclaimed chefs, it stays open throughout the night serving up delicious local and international dishes.
