Geiranger

Geiranger is famous first and foremost for its fjord, the Geiranger Fjord, which by many is considered the most beautiful in the world. The landscape with its traces of original settlements is also on the UNESCO World Heritage list of preserved areas.

Natural romance

It is undeniably a grand spectacle, and has attracted millions of visitors since the first cruise ship anchored up here in 1869. If you are not privileged with a ticket on one of the many cruise ships, making the trip by ferry from Hellesylt to Geiranger is the most rewarding way of experiencing the fjord. Along the sides of the fjord you pass several abandoned farms, many of them restored to their original 18th and 19th century looks. Snow covers the tall surrounding peaks and, when melting throughout summer, gives force to the numerous waterfalls crashing into the fjord. The most impressive of these are the Seven Sisters with the neighbouring Suitor. When the latter at times crosses over into his neighbours’ streams it is believed that he is wooing the sisters to marry him. The Bridal Veil waterfall is another natural beauty, aptly named with to its wide and light streams resembling a bridal veil, partly revealing the underlying face of the rock wall.

Walking and seeing

Once on dry land in Geiranger walk up to one or several of the many brilliant viewpoints on the surrounding hills and mountains. The Vesteråsfjellet and Skageflå mountains offer many signposted trekking routes, and free maps are available at the tourist information office and any hotel or guesthouse. Set out for a pearl of a view over the jewel in the crown of Norwegian scenery. It is also possible to drive up to viewpoints such as the Ørnesvingen, the Flydalsjuvet and the Dalsnibba. The lakes and rivers in the mountains offer excellent angling.

Getting on the fjord

There are plenty of opportunities for further exploring the fjord as well. It is easy to hire a boat, most of which supply fishing equipment for fantastic angling. You can also go on guided canoe or kayak trips, none of which require prior experience and are perfectly suitable for families with children. Make the most of your stay in one of the most spectacular and breathtaking places in Norway!
