The Troldhaugen estate, once home to the world famous composer Edvard Grieg, now functions as an elaborate museum. The well preserved compound houses Grieg's original Victorian villa, his composer's hut and gravesite. All buildings are intact with original furniture and artefacts from the period Edvard and his wife lived here, from 1885 to 1907. The museum is placed on an idyllic hill overlooking the Nordås Lake, a short bus ride from central Bergen.
Concerts
In addition to the original houses there is also the building Troldsalen, a concert hall with seating for 200 people. During the summer season there are frequent concerts presenting pieces of Grieg's music interspersed with historical facts about his life. Every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday you can enjoy Grieg's most famous compositions such as "Morning Mood", "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and "Solveig's Song". There are also regular classical concerts with internationally acclaimed artists held here throughout the year.
Museum
The
Troldsalen also houses an excellent museum exhibition with extensive
information on the life of Grieg, from his early years as a boy in Bergen, to
his years of study and work abroad and his final years at Troldhaugen. There is
also an excellent cafe and souvenir shop in the building.
Do not
leave Bergen without getting more acquainted with the city's much-loved son and
the country's most renowned composer.
