With its central position as a trading post in fish, Stavanger emerged as the country’s leading producer of fish related products. This provided grounds for a thriving canning industry, which from the 1890s and up until the 1960s (when oil was discovered off the coast), was the most significant trade in the city. The Stavanger Canning Museum, located in authentic factory environment in Old Stavanger, documents this era. Opened in 1982 the museum features extensive exhibitions of historic photographs and thousands of label files. Here you can witness the chain of production from raw fish to cans ready for the shelf. Try to visit on a Tuesday or a Thursday when the original smoking ovens are lit, and indulge in the smells and the tastes of fresh brisling. The museum has services in several languages and activity stalls for children.
