The Bryggen is a must see attraction for all visitors to Bergen. Featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the characteristic wood houses along the Bryggen reflect the importance of Bergen as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century.
Many great fires, the last in 1955, have ravaged the characteristic wooden houses of the Bryggen. Rebuilding has followed in accordance with old patterns and methods, preserving the main structure. Today the Bryggen is a living illustration of the city’s history, with 61 protected buildings covering about 13,000 m2.
Modern day Bryggen has a lively atmosphere with restaurants, pubs and shops carrying local arts and crafts. During summer, visitors to the outdoor cafes and pubs populate the area between the wood houses and the waterfront.
