What is it that makes the Norwegian west coast so spellbinding and breathtaking to visitors? For most, it is the steep and winding fjords, the tall and snow-capped mountains, the clear and deep freshwater lakes and the immense and majestic glaciers.

Stryn is where all these aspects come together. Go trekking in the mountains, catch fish in the deep lakes or ferocious rivers, go on a boat trip on the fjords and see mountain walls rising dramatically from the water, or put on warm clothes and good boots and take a guided tour on the glacier. With only a slight interest in nature and wildlife you will not be bored in Stryn.
Glaciers
Only a tiny village by international standards, Stryn is significant as a crossroads between the fjords and the mountains of western Norway. Excavations reveal settlements dating as far back as the late Stone Age. People settled here as soon as the ice that had covered most parts of Scandinavia started receding. The largest remaining glacier on mainland Europe, the Jostedal glacier, bears witness to the immense forces that helped shape the spectacular landscape of modern day Norway. Guided treks are possible during the summer season on one of the three arms of the main glacier, the Bødal glacier.
Activities
The range of activities in general is vast in Stryn. In addition to trekking you can also ride in the mountains on a Fjord horse, a local species expertly traversing the hillsides. Mountain bikes are also a great way of getting around.
Stay active and get wet at the same time. Take on the straits in one of the wild rivers in the area in a raft or kayak, or explore the lakes and fjords at your own pace in a canoe. Boat trips are also on offer, and many provide fishing equipment for eager anglers. For the more adventurous types, Stryn is also gaining fame as an excellent place for challenging rock and boulder climbing. Heading out through the fjord to the open sea you can also take on cold north Atlantic surf just outside of Stadt, the westernmost point of Norway. The rough weather renders this a must for hard core surfers.
